What is happening at Condong Public School?
A project is underway to rebuild Condong Public School after it was damaged by floods in early 2022. Students are currently learning from the former Murwillumbah South Infants School and will remain there until a decision has been made about the long-term plans for the school.
Current status
- Condong Public School is considered a high flood evacuation risk by the SES and Tweed Shire Council have expressed concerns about a new school being built on the existing site.
- Due to the high level of planning risk, Condong Public School will remain at the former Murwillumbah South Infants School until a decision has been made about the long-term plans for the school.
- The former Murwillumbah South Infants School continues to work with School Infrastructure to undertake maintenance to ensue students and staff are as comfortable as possible.
- Possums Preschool will remain onsite for another 12 months.
Next steps
SINSW continues to work with Tweed Shire Council, SES and Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation to develop a long-term plan for the school.
In the meantime, the students are discovering that every location can be a treasure trove of experiences. The following photos demonstrate how the staff and students at Condong Public School have adapted to their new environment.
A commitment to rebuild Condong Public School in the long term remains. SINSW continues to seek advice from the NRRC relating to the rollout of their various housing program strategies to ensure our school infrastructure meet the long-term needs of the community, the SES and Tweed Shire Council.
